Interview with Alumna Hazel Hieftje


2012 Greek Week is almost here!  Do you remember walking and staying up for Relay for Life or participating in MTV Night?  For our next interviewee, Hazel Hieftje, winning 3rd place in Songfest during Greek Week ranks up there as one of her favorite Pi Phi memories.

Did you live in the house? Yes  How many years? 2

Favorite Pi Phi memory? There are a few... Winning 3rd place in Songfest during Greek Week, the best Sisterhood and Recruitment at Greek Gala my senior year.  I also remember Preference night, my freshman year, and knowing I was right where I belonged.

What are you up to now? I have been married for 3 years (4 years in May).  My husband and I enjoy living in the Texas Hill Country with our dog Lexus.  I work for a Texas/ Mexico Grocery Store chain called HEB as the Assistant Store Director in Fredericksburg, Texas.

How has Pi Phi influenced/affected your post-college life? Pi Phi has had a major influence on my career in retail, it helped develop my passion for leadership.  Planning events and recruitment parties has actually come in handy.  Along with my other responsibilities, I also plan store events.

Are you involved officially as alumnae (Alum Club, AAC, House Corp)? Alum Club What chapter? San Antonio

What are your thoughts on your involvement as an alumnae in the group you participate in? I wish I had more time.

What do you wish you had known when you were in college? That it doesn’t last forever.

Giving what you know now, what advice would you give to your college-age self? Enjoy every minute, don’t get caught up in the gossip and go to class!

Do you have any resume pointers or interview skills to share?  Type out a thank you note and mail it the day of the interview.  I believe this helped me land my current job.

What is something you wish you were better at? Staying in touch with my friends.

Do you have a personal motto? Follow your heart and set goals.

Do you have a favorite quote?  “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.” Dr. Seuss

Favorite TV Show and/or Movie? I enjoy watching mindless TV mostly reality shows.

What is something on your bucket list? Live in another country.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I will have a family, own a house, and be a Store Director for HEB.

What is something people may not know about you? I would love to open my own bakery in a small town.
